Values Are Ongoing Qualities Of Action

Consider values as verbs; they are the way in which you do something, not something you achieve. Getting married or moving in with someone, for example, is a goal. Once you’ve done it, you’ve done it. Tick it off the list. But how do you want to conduct yourself as a partner in that relationship? If you value being loving, for example, does that all stop the second you get married and achieve that goal? You don’t achieve being ‘loving’ – you bring that quality in your behaviour with the other person even when you don’t feel like it. And let’s face it, quite often that’s what relationships are all about, whether they are with your spouse, parents, children, colleagues or pets.
